January 19th is National Popcorn Day. Did you know Purdue University is deeply seeded in popcorn history? [Editor’s note: Yes, the spelling is intentional. Yes, we like it too!]

Perhaps the most recognizable face in popcorn is Orville Redenbacher, a 1928 Purdue graduate. In 1951, Redenbacher began his quest to perfect popping corn. Almost 20 years later in 1970, Orville Redenbacher Popcorn was launched. The rest is history!

Purdue University remains at the forefront of the popcorn industry thanks to research in the College of Agriculture and the efforts of several companies.

One such company is Ag Alumni Seed — a leader in hybrid popcorn research — which licensed Purdue popcorn germplasm 27 years ago and continues to develop its product based upon Purdue technology.

“Purdue was the early leader in developing hybrid popcorn seed going back to the 1950s,” said Jay Hulbert, president and CEO of Ag Alumni Seed. “At one time, probably more than 60% of the popcorn produced worldwide had its roots in Purdue genetics. Purdue genetics still figure prominently in popcorn hybrids used all over the world today.”

As you celebrate National Popcorn Day — whether your favorite toppings are butter, salt, cheese, caramel, herbs and spices, or other combinations — remember these kernels of truth about Purdue and popcorn. [Editor’s note: Yes, it’s another pun. Yes, we like it too!]
